Junior High Track It was a red-letter day! The first full junior high track team for Polk County traveled to their first track meet. Against the Edneyville Yellow Jackets, they competed hard and estab lished the first statistics for the junior high record book. Tire Polk boys suffered their first loss too, but the spirited team was far from defeated. Among the first scorers for Polk County, Jermaine Wilker son and the 800m relay team took top honors. Wilkerson placed first in the 800m run with a time of 2:48.34 and first in the 1600m run at 6:06. Jason Trifiro, Antwan Jackson, Brian Kanupp, and Kevin Williams combined their efforts to win the relay in 2:06.2. In field events, Polk County took two second place scores: Brian Kanupp, Long Jump at 15'0"; and Rashawn Cunning ham, Triple Jump at 28'8-1/2". Receiving third place ribbons were Tony Brown, High Jump at 4'9"; and Billy Simpson, Long Jump at 13'6". Also scor ing in the third slot were hurd lers Brian Kanupp, 110m High 20.70; and Kurt Weingartner 300m Intermediate 1:05.03. The Polk County boys showed their strength in the running events. In addition to their three first place ribbons, the runners earned eight other scores. Nathan Taylor ran the 100m dash in 13.34 and the 200m dash in 27.55, placing third in each race. Billy Simp son and Jason Trifiro took sec ond and third in the 1600m run with times of 6:43 and 6:54, respectively. In the 400m Dash, Rashawn Cunningham 1:07; and Ken Williams, 1:08, showed their speed and placed second and third. Mike Hall ran the 800m in 2:55.02 to earn third, and John Hutcherson did a particu larly good job in the 600m run for seventh graders, 2:04.9, second place. In field events, the following athletes also participated: John Hutcherson, Chad Hannon, and Mike Hall, Shot; Justin Webb, and Brad Cavin, Discus; Adam Gilbert, Pole Vault and Discus; Andy Chaffin, and Kurt Wcin- gartner, Pole Vault; Antwan Jackson, Long Jump; and Kevin Williams 110 Hurdles. The 400m relay team for sev enth graders consisted of Ryan Mill, John Hutcherson, Justin Webb, and Brent Burnette. They ran in 1:01.53. The open 400m relay team consisted of Billy Simpson, Antwan Jack son, Nathan Taylor, and Tony Brown. Their time was 55.56. Running in the 1600m relay were Mike Hall, Jason Trifiro, Andy Chaffin, Jermaine Wil kerson. They finished in 5:08.77. The following ran in individ ual events: Rashawn Cunning ham 100m, 200m; Adam Gil- bert 400m, Tony Brown 200m, Ryan Mills and Brent Burnette 7th grade 600. Coach Harriet Peoples com mented, "This was a special day for a special group of kids. They gave this meet their best shot, and I couldn't have been prouder. The wind blew, the temperature dropped, and it even snowed, but we had a great time. This team has lots of spirit." -Patty Aldred, Reporter Men's Bridge Results of the Tryon Men's Duplicate Bridge Club match at the home of Bill Stoddard on Tuesday, April 7th were: 1st R.B. Scruggs and Tom Dustin; 2nd Charlie Stratford and John Thompson; 3rd Bill Stoddard and Dick Long. The next match will be at the home of Art Faber on Tuesday, April 14th. -Community Reporter T.C. Roberson finished second with 177. Tuesday, under ideal weather conditions, the Wolverines hosted Blue Ridge High School in a match at Links 0 Tryon. The Wolverines had a team score of 168 lead by Benji McCall who carded a 3 over par 39 for the day. Benji was pur sued by Chad Dotson who shot 40, and Mark Smith who had a 41 for the day. Brian Morse and Chris Gibbs each shot 48 to complete the scoring for the Wolverines. Blue Ridge had a team score of 205 and were led by Pat Stewart who had 45 for his round. On Thursday, the Wolverines were to travel to Spartanburg to play against the strong team from Spartanburg High School. At 2:30 that afternoon, the golf coaches from both schools con cluded that the weather was simply too cold and windy to attempt playing. Arrangements to reschedule this match arc still pending. This week (April 6), the Wolverines hosted a match at Red Fox Country Club on Monday, and traveled to Holly Forest Country Club to play Blue Ridge on Wednesday and host C.D. Owen High School at Links OTryon Thursday. -Patty Aldred, Reporter Wolverine Golfers Still Progressing The third week of the Wolve rine golf season played hostage to the weather on two occasions resulting in the postponement of one match and the cancellation of a second match. The match scheduled for the Links O'Tryon on Mon., March 30 was postponed until Wed., April 1 because of the threat of bad weather. On Wednesday, the Wolverines were unable to field a complete team because of illness, doctor's appoint ments, and other conflicts. Three of the Wolverines were available to play during the match and Chad Dotson of Polk County finished as the individ ual leader with a one over par 37 for the round. Mark Smith carded a 44 for the Wolverines, while Brian Morse had a total of 47 strokes for the day. The team competition was won by Pisgah High School with a team score of 175, while Spring Revival Oak Grove Baptist Church will be having Revival Services Apr. 12 - 16. Sunday night services start at 7 p.m. and Monday through Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. Jim Fanning from Glendale Baptist Church will be the guest speaker. Special music nightly. A nursery will be pro vided. The public is cordially invited to attend.
